I broke it down into six easy steps for you to help you get the maximum traffic that you can from each and every hashtag that you use.

So let's get started. First of all, you have to know your niche. You have to understand the language and the conversation that the people in your business are having. How are people finding your products?

How are they finding your services? More importantly, what words do they use to describe your products and services? Or the feeling that they get from using your products and services? All of these are really key indicators when you're first building your hashtag list. Next, you want to really understand what kind of searches are being conducted in order to find your business, your product, your service, or the people that are in your industry.

You have to understand how the conversations are flowing. So one of the great ways you can do this is simply to just start doing some keyword research on a tool like Instagram. If you go right up to the search bar at the top of your browser, or on your mobile app. You can just type in any keyword or any search word that pops into your head and see what kind of visibility it's getting, how many people are using it and the kind of social media posts that it's already being included in.

The next thing you're going to want to do is notice, is this keyword too general or too overused or being used in an inappropriate way that you don't want to be aligned with in your business? And These are all things that you really want to keep a close eye on. Here's a great way to stand out from the crowd.

Create a branded hashtag specifically for your business or for your service, or if you're having an event for the event intended. You can create as many branded hashtags as you want, but remember, for the most part, it's only going to be your business that's using them unless you're starting an influencer campaign or you have a specific contest going on.

Take a look at what some of your competitors are using for their hashtags, how they're using them, and what kind of message it's conveying. This will give you a good indication of the kind of hashtags you're going to want to use for your business. And if you want to make your social media work for you, instead of just creating more work for you, download my social media strategy planner.

But don't be a hashtag jumper, because you know what, you're going to end up getting buried in all of the flurry of the other people that are trying to jump on that same hashtag. Some great cultural hashtags that you can use are ones that are centered around holidays.

You know, we have a national day of something for every single thing. I mean, I think we just missed national day of pizza, and there's definitely a national day for donuts coming up. Those are some fun hashtags that you can throw right into your post that are going to put you right in the cultural conversation.

And who doesn't love donuts? Okay, one of the biggest pieces of advice I can give you, and maybe a little controversial to some people is stop trying to copy what celebrities and other huge influencers are already doing. Trust me, if you think that using a hashtag like Kylie skin is going to get you any traction for your home fitness business.

It's really not. Remember, the reason that you use hashtags is in order to direct traffic to your social media posts, but you want to make sure it's the right traffic, that it's people that are going to actually be interested in your business, your service, your product, or whatever the message is that you're putting out there.

So just by jumping on a hashtag that other people are using is not necessarily going to do anything for your business. But by doing a little bit of research, and a little bit of investigation, you're going to find the hashtags that are going to be best for you, and are going to give you the biggest bang for your buck.

Oh, wait a minute. Actually, hashtags are free. So use them freely. And before I forget, you know we have a hashtag limit for our Instagram. 30 only, please. And on Twitter, it's whatever you can fit into the post. And you know, the jury's still out over on Facebook. They have hashtags, but they don't get that much traction in search.

However, I would still recommend using at least five over there. And don't let me forget LinkedIn. Our LinkedIn baby is coming up strong and they are definitely using hashtags. And remember, LinkedIn is focused more on business people, and they are very savvy using terms that are going to be directly related to their industry.

So make sure when you're posting about your business, the hashtags you're using over on LinkedIn, Are aligned with your business goals and your business message.
